The 1847 Society: Recognizing Deferred Giving
On February 25, 1847, only two months after Iowa was admitted to the Union, the First General Assembly established a public university in Iowa City. This commitment to higher education, like Iowa's limestone bedrock, provides a foundation for our state's quality of life and serves as a national symbol of excellence.
On the sesquicentennial of the founding of The University of Iowa, the UI Foundation established the 1847 Society to recognize alumni and friends who have made a deferred gift to benefit the University through the UI Foundation.
The foresight and planning of those who arrange a deferred gift today is just as important to the future of the institution as the vision of those leaders who gathered in the state capitol building on the banks of the Iowa River, late in the winter of 1847.
Just as the University of Iowa founders could not have imagined the international prominence of the UI today, so today's students and faculty can only imagine what challenges they will face tomorrow. We do know that higher education will always be crucial to the future of our community, state, and nation.
