A Gift for Writing
Novelist James Patterson, who has sold more than 350 million books worldwide, made a gift in 2016 to fund five scholarships for current Iowa Writers’ Workshop students; this year he is planning to add five more. Ultimately, the Patterson Family Foundation will be covering tuition for ten writers in the creative writing program.
Serving our Alumni and Friends:
The University of Iowa Center for Advancement
All of us who love the University of Iowa—alumni, fans, patients, arts patrons, students, parents, and friends—want the opportunity to stay connected. Returning to campus for Homecoming, joining a local IOWA Club, mentoring a student, speaking to a class, donating to research—there are so many ways to engage with the UI, no matter where you live or what your stage of life.
Creating opportunities for everyone to stay engaged is at the core of the university's commitment to advancement. Advancement describes all that our alumni and friends do to strengthen the UI.
I am happy to announce the University of Iowa Center for Advancement. The UI Center for Advancement is formed from the merging of the UI Alumni Association and the UI Foundation. The board of directors of each organization voted to create a unified organization that would better serve our alumni and friends. The UI Center for Advancement draws on the expertise of alumni engagement and fundraising staff while investing in new staff and programs to serve all alumni and friends in the state and the region, across the country, and around the world.
While what we’re doing isn't new—a 2016 survey showed that of nearly 500 U.S. schools, 68 percent have a combined alumni engagement and fundraising organization—we are doing it in a uniquely Iowa way. We will serve the needs of our Hawkeye nation through a variety of programming. We want to hear from you about what you want from the university—networking opportunities? Family-friendly events? Senior College? Please tell us how you want to connect.
We are excited to build on existing programs and offer new opportunities, and we hope to enrich your lives through a closer connection with the UI.
