UI Children's Hospital
This is Dr. Katherine Mathews. But you can call her "Phil."
She's Phil because she's changing patient's lives with the help of private support. As director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology and a professor of pediatrics, Dr. Mathews specializes in child neurology and child neuromuscular diseases. She is one of a handful of neurologists throughout the country who are researching the use of ultrasound to replace the more painful tests used to diagnose muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy.
Through the generous gift of a portable ultrasound machine from Peregrine Charities, Dr. Mathews is exploring ultrasound's potential for both diagnosis and follow-up care. "External funding is vital to my work," she says. "Gifts like this ultrasound machine can make all the difference for patients and families."
