About The University of Iowa Museum of Art
It is more than a Museum of Art -- it is a museum about art!
The UI Museum of Art (UIMA) serves the University and the surrounding region by providing an inviting and inspiring place to explore the role of the visual arts in human life. Five permanent galleries represent a collection of about 12,000 works of art:
- European and American art since 1900, including works by Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Grant Wood, and other masters
- A world-renowned collection of African art
- Art of the ancient Americas
- Prints, drawings, and photographs
- A collection of prints by Mauricio Lasansky, a UI treasure of national significance
The Museum hosts major special exhibitions as well. Several exhibitions that have had an important influence on the art world -- such as the first-ever comprehensive presentation of Victorian Fairy Paintings, curated in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London -- had their roots at the UIMA.
Educational and entertaining lectures, concerts, readings, and other events for community members of all ages, often presented in conjunction with other UI arts programs, round out an innovative resource for Iowans. Information about current exhibitions and upcoming lectures and events can be found on the UIMA website.
UI artists receive crucial national exposure in the UIMA's annual M.F.A. exhibit, showcasing the creative thesis work of UI studio arts graduate students.
The museum also features the Museum Store and the Coffee Bar overlooking the Iowa River.
Private support from Friends of the Museum is essential to maintaining and expanding the museum's offerings. Make your online gift now!
