Private support for the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business has changed Erin Cavanagh's life -- and will transform her future, too.
"Generous alumni and friends have helped me make the most of my time as a UI accounting major," says Erin. She enrolled in the Tippie College of Business through the college's Early Admission Program, which admits freshmen directly into the college and assists them in acclimating to college culture, integrating into student organizations, and gaining earlier access to business courses.
"One of the major reasons I came to Iowa, rather than another institution, was because private support gave me the freedom to focus on my education, rather than worrying about making ends meet while I was in school," says Erin.
She not only received a Presidential Scholarship -- the University’s most prestigious merit-based scholarship -- but she also was named a Tippie Outstanding Scholar and received several other scholarships from the Tippie College of Business. The financial assistance allowed her to focus on her studies and engage in leadership and service activities.
These activities include working as a student editor in the college's Judith R. Frank Business Communication Center and serving on the executive board for the 10,000 Hours Show. The innovative 10,000 Hours Show, which began at the UI and has spread to other schools, is a student-led effort to recruit young volunteers to serve local nonprofit organizations. In return for their service, volunteers receive a free ticket to an exclusive, big-name concert performed exclusively for the volunteer participants in the 10,000 Hours Show program.
In addition to this work, Erin will study abroad in Sevilla, Spain, in the spring of 2008, and she has landed crucial career-building internships at Merrill Lynch and Ernst & Young. She feels confident that such experiences -- combined with what she's learning in Tippie College of Business classrooms -- will help fulfill her dream of attending law school and, one day, working in the field of either business consulting or corporate law.
"Private support really does make a difference for students like me. I'm living proof that such generosity can help change people's lives."
