Endowment Support for the UI

An endowment is a permanent financial resource that provides perpetual income. Unlike legislative appropriations or annual contributions, endowments are invested to protect the "purchasing power" of the gift by providing steadily growing amounts of spendable earnings over time.

Establishing a named, endowed gift is a way of ensuring that your support will last for generations.

Just as important, by creating new endowed funds, contributors will assist the UI in reaching one of its most ambitious campaign goals: to double the size of the University's existing endowment -- approximately $460 million -- by the end of the campaign.

Endowed funds may be unrestricted, which means they can be used wherever the need is greatest, or they may be specified for a particular UI college, department, or program. Among the ways in which endowed funds are particularly valuable to the University and will help us attain our campaign goals are these:

• Endowed scholarship funds, either need- or merit-based, in any UI academic program, for UI student-athletes, or UI-wide (such as Presidential Scholarships and Opportunity at Iowa Scholarships)
• Endowed faculty positions, including chairs, professorships, and deanships, in any UI college
• Endowed research funds, whether in the health sciences, social sciences, the arts, or other disciplines
• Endowed funds to support new or existing programs or initiatives in any UI college or department
• Endowed Iowa Impact Funds, providing unrestricted income to be directed wherever the UI president believes it can be of most use
