Good. Better. Best. Words that describe how the faculty and staff—those at the heart of The University of Iowa—strive each day to make this the best possible place to learn, work, live, and grow. UI faculty and staff have always led the way—in the classroom and the laboratory, in research and administration, in technical services and office support.
This campaign will help assure that these campus leaders, who play such a vital role in educating the leaders of tomorrow, will have the resources they need to excel throughout their career cycle.
Competition for outstanding college and university faculty and staff is fierce. We must do everything possible to retain top-flight faculty and staff at Iowa and support their efforts. With their help, the University can reach the pinnacle of teaching, research, and service.
It is imperative for us to establish a minimum of 100 new endowed faculty positions that will continue to attract—and keep—excellence at Iowa.
- Endowed deanships provide flexible resources for deans to meet special needs in their colleges.
(Minimum commitment: $2 million)
- Endowed faculty chairs are the highest honor the University can bestow on outstanding faculty members. The faculty member's dean and the provost use the endowment income to supplement the chairholder's salary and to support his or her academic pursuits.
(Minimum commitment: $1.5 million)
- Endowed professorships recognize distinguished faculty members and annually provide partial support of salary or teaching, research, and scholarship expenses.
(Minimum commitment: $500,000)
- Endowed fellowships support early- to mid-career faculty members, giving them the recognition and resources to pursue the best work possible in teaching and research.
(Minimum commitment: $100,000)
We also have created four new staff awards to reward exceptional performance and initiative among UI employees and provide opportunities for continuing education.
There is no better time to invest in Iowa's vital human resources through endowed positions, funds for visiting professors, staff development funds, and flexible, unrestricted faculty resources.
If we do not act to create more endowed positions that attract and retain the country's top minds, we will lose our best faculty and staff to other institutions offering better salaries or more research funding. And one by one, we will also lose out on hiring the most qualified prospective members of our community to institutions with stronger endowments.
Your gift for these teachers, scholars, and innovators will be far greater than you may realize. It will be a gift for each Iowa student—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

"The most valuable thing about endowed professorships is that they enable students to work with people who are the best in their fields—the leaders, the cutting-edge researchers who have the time and resources to do this kind of work and are feeding it straight back into the classrooms.
"Iowa students get to learn things that may have been discovered just yesterday."
