How to Give to the UI's Comprehensive Campaign

By Mary Louise Petersen, 1951 B.A.
Campaign Co-Chair
Harlan, Iowa

A better future starts with you. And with me. And with all of us who believe we must give back to our communities.

As co-chair for The Campaign to Advance Our Great University and as a University of Iowa graduate and contributor, I believe there is no more powerful way to transform my state, my nation -- even my world -- than to support education. The University of Iowa can change lives and so can our gifts.

Giving is a very personal experience: It's about one human being helping another. That's why all contributions, no matter what the size or giving method, are so meaningful for each member of the UI community. Whether you choose to give stocks, cash, or personal property -- or to arrange to support the UI through your estate plans -- remember that your gift is going to help people. Plus, you can direct your gift to whatever University area or areas you choose.

Here are a few ways of giving through The University of Iowa Foundation that might be right for you:

Current Gifts

  • Make an outright gift of cash or appreciated securities
  • Make a two- to five-year pledge of cash or appreciated securities that spreads your giving over time
  • Use a distribution from a qualified retirement plan to tap into sheltered resources and minimize tax consequences

Deferred Gifts

  • Retain total control of your assets during your lifetime but include a charitable bequest for the UI in your will or trust
  • Make a gift that generates income to you or your loved ones, provides tax benefits, and supports the University
  • Bypass potential estate and income tax by designating the UI Foundation as beneficiary of a retirement plan, pension benefits, or an IRA
  • More information about deferred gifts and gift planning

The UI Foundation has numerous ways to make any of the above options work for your situation -- or to combine giving strategies that fit your circumstances.

This is just a sampling of the many avenues you can choose to make the most of your campaign commitment to The University of Iowa. You can tailor your gift to your specific interests and circumstances by contacting UI Foundation staff to discuss your personal financial situation and philanthropic goals.

Whatever support you can offer during this campaign not only will better the UI community, but also will ensure the best future possible.

Your gift will make a difference in so many lives. And you can feel good knowing that it all comes back to you.

Additional information about ways to support The University of Iowa also is available on this site.
