Campus Beautification
at The University of Iowa
Campus Beautification is far more than planting flowers: It involves seeing the entire outdoor campus as integral to the UI experience for the thousands of people who come to our home along the Iowa River to study, work, live, and visit.
Studies show that prospective students rank campus appearance high among their reasons for choosing a college -- and the visual character of the University leaves a lasting impression among other visitors as well.
The UI's campus planners make decisions that preserve the traditional character of the outdoor campus while enhancing it aesthetically and making it increasingly accessible to all.
While facilities projects that result in new and renovated buildings carry their own budgets, projects involving the spaces around and between buildings throughout campus -- such as gathering spaces, walkways, campus entry points, and natural areas -- are frequently underfunded.
By joining in the $12 million Campus Beautification element of the UI's comprehensive Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, contributors have an opportunity to help focus substantial resources on transforming the UI campus experience. Campus Beautification initiatives include:
- Creating a terraced river plaza on the west side of the Iowa Memorial Union, designed to encourage students and others to gather along the Iowa River
- Extending the T. Anne Cleary Walkway northward to North Hall and to the areas around Currier, Burge, Daum, and Stanley residence halls
- Preserving traditional areas of campus such as the Pentacrest
- Enhancing the Iowa River corridor and other natural areas
- Aesthetically improving the main entry points to campus
- Maintaining ongoing planting and renewal projects throughout campus
