About the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center
The essential goal of the University of Iowa's Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC), an integral element of UI Health Care and a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, is to significantly decrease the pain and suffering caused by all forms of cancer in Iowa, the surrounding region, and around the world.
We strive to achieve this goal through three interdependent missions:
- Patient Care
The John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center in UI Hospitals and Clinics, with a full spectrum of resources available to patients and their families, provides state-of-the-art, compassionate care to patients with cancer. The Pappajohn Center is a centerpiece of HCCC.
- Research
HCCC performs research exploring the nature of cancer and its causes, with the goal of developing new approaches to preventing and treating cancer. Approximately 200 cancer researchers and clinicians in 27 departments and 6 colleges at the UI work together to fight cancer.
- Education
HCCC works with the UI's health colleges to educate the next generation of cancer caregivers and researchers; provides continuing education resources to keep professionals up to date on recent advances; and provides information to the public through support groups and other programs related to cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.
In 2000, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center was designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. This designation is the institute's highest honor and places Iowa's facility among the top tier of cancer centers -- only 41 such designations exist nationwide.
Charitable giving helps make HCCC's work possible. Friends of the HCCC are partners in the effort to control and ultimately cure cancer. Make your online gift now!
