Iowa City (population 62,000) is located in east central Iowa in Johnson County (pop.130,000). Coralville (pop. 19,000), North Liberty (pop. 13,000), and several small towns make up the surrounding community.

Iowa City’s downtown pedestrian mall and nearby Northside Neighborhood boast a number of restaurants and shops, theaters, pubs, art galleries, and a large public library. In the summers, downtown is bustling with farmers’ markets, live music, and a number of festivals.

The nearby countryside, good state parks, extensive trail systems, and the Iowa River provide many opportunities for walking, biking, and boating.

Area residents enjoy big-city amenities in a small-town atmosphere, and the UI attracts and sponsors a wide variety of programming throughout the community, including lectures and performances by visiting authors, artists, scientists, and historians. Hawkeye sports also attract thousands of fans to Iowa City each season. These characteristics have earned the area recognition from a variety of organizations:

  • Iowa Great Place designation, Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs
  • “Best-Performing Small Cities” list (#9), Milken Institute
  • “Best Places to Begin a Career” list (#5), Forbes Magazine

Iowa City also was named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2009.

Twenty miles to the north is Cedar Rapids, Iowa’s second-largest city, home to the Eastern Iowa Airport and a population of about 120,000. And Iowa City is within a four-hour drive to several major Midwest cities, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Omaha, Kansas City, and Minneapolis.
