Project Overview

The University of Iowa has beguna series of vital enhancements to the 27-year-old UI campus landmark, Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the help of significant private support from loyal Iowa Hawkeye fans and other Athletic Department funding, Hawkeye men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and volleyball teams will continue to have facilities that rival the finest in the Big Ten and nationally.

The estimated total cost of the Carver-Hawkeye Arena project is $43 million and is being paid for entirely with Athletic Department revenues. The financing plan will include both private fundraising—through a $20 million campaign—and the issuance of bonds.

Plans include:

  • A new practice gym complex for men's and women's basketball and volleyball
  • A state-of-the-art, 8,000-square-foot strength and conditioning center
  • Renovation and expansion of the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex
  • New locker rooms for men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and wrestling
  • Enhancement of the fan experience:
    • Improved and updated concourse, including new concession areas and additional restrooms
    • Premium seating opportunities with expanded hospitality and entertainment areas
    • A new large, high-speed patron elevator
  • New/remodeled office and meeting space for the 135+ coaches and staff who work with student-athletes in the arena

Timeline

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2009. A 24-month construction cycle is planned to complete the project in time for the 2011-12 athletic year.
