About the College of Dentistry
The University of Iowa College of Dentistry, established in 1882, is widely considered one of the best dental schools in the nation and is an integral part of a premier academic health center in one of the nation’s finest public universities.
The only dental school in the U.S. with programs in all American Dental Association-recognized specialties, the college has trained 80 percent of Iowa's practicing dentists. It serves professionals throughout the state, the U.S., and the world through its continuing-education programs.
The College of Dentistry's commitment to serving the dental-health needs of all Iowans is exemplified by its Geriatric Mobile Unit, which brings equipment and expertise to nursing homes and care facilities, and its Special Care Clinic, which specializes in providing dental care for special-needs patients.
Private support has been instrumental in the college's success. Some examples of philanthropy in action in the college include:
- Thousands of annual gifts of all sizes from alumni and friends each year (the college has the highest percentage among UI colleges of alumni who make annual gifts)
- 67 privately supported scholarship accounts
- 13 named, endowed faculty positions
- 82 privately supported research and program funds
- The privately endowed Dows Institute for Dental Research
The University of Iowa College of Dentistry Building Transformation Campaign is a multi-year initiative to help fund the creation of a state-of-the art facility that will accommodate and anticipate important advances in the field. The Dental Science Building modernization, which will require approximately a decade to complete, includes three major elements:
- Constructing a new three-story clinic addition on the west side of the south wing
- Renovating the clinical areas in the existing south wing
- Substantially modernizing the research areas in the fourth and first floors of the north wing
