Iowa natives Jackson and Nona Seberg Roe met at the University in the 1940s, when she had completed a degree in Communication and Theatre Arts and was working as social director at the student union, and he was studying dentistry. Today, after more than 55 years of marriage, they still have a "soft spot for supporting education at The University of Iowa." For many years, most of them spent in California, the Roes maintained their passion for the UI. Their support reflects their broad range of interests, with gifts to the Hancher Circle Fund, the Hawkeye men's and women's athletics programs, and the UI Alumni Association. When the couple moved back to Iowa City in 1999, they did more than re-commit to their home state. They worked with Dave Triplett of the UI Foundation gift planning department and other Foundation staff to develop a personalized giving strategy that met their personal needs and philanthropic priorities, while helping the UI maximize its opportunities. Their gifts to establish the Jackson H. and Nona Seberg Roe Professorship in Orthodontics, and the Jackson H. and Nona Seberg Roe Faculty Fellowship in the Special Care Clinic, both in the College of Dentistry, reveal a firm commitment to the UI. "Maintaining an excellent faculty is not easy to do," says Jackson. "We wanted to help ensure the excellence of the Iowa program will continue. "No matter where you go, the UI College of Dentistry is considered one of the best. When I started my orthodontic practice in California, people recognized and respected my Iowa degree," Jackson says. "We moved back to Iowa because it's where we got our start. And we're giving back to the University so others will get the same great start we had."
