What Gifts Have Done in the Past
Gifts to the College of Dentistry from alumni and friends enable the college to provide scholarships to worthy students, update critical equipment and facilities, help students attend professional conferences and meetings, and more. Here are a few examples of how private giving has helped the students and faculty of the college do their best work:
- An educational fund that can be used for student tuition or continuing education fees for College of Dentistry faculty members was created by C.F. "Larry" Barrett (1944 D.D.S.) and Lois L. Barrett (1944 B.A.) of Bettendorf, Iowa. The fund is named the Dr. John Montgomery, Jim McLeran, Pierre Fauchard Academy Educational Fund in honor of James A. McLeran (1957 D.D.S., 1962 D.D.S.), dean emeritus of the college; Dr. John C. Montgomery, former executive dean who retired in 1997; and Pierre Fauchard, the French dentist regarded as the "father of modern dentistry."
- Ray O. Lawson (1936 D.D.S.) of Vero Beach, Florida, established the Dr. Ray O. and Ruth Lawson Scholarship, awarded to Iowa residents with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher after their first year in the college.
- Gifts from alumni and friends helped build the new College of Dentistry Simulation Clinic, which benefits dentistry students and faculty by creating opportunities for hands-on learning.
- Henry W. Fields and the late Mildred F. Fields of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, made a gift of stock to continue their generous support of the Dr. Henry W. Fields, Jr. Scholarship Fund for graduate students in pediatric dentistry.
These are just several examples of the generosity that helps the College of Dentistry remain as one of only two schools in the nation providing advanced education in all dental specialties.
