"As soon as I visited the UI, that was it. The facilities are great, the people are friendly, and there are unique opportunities like the Student Research Program, and rotations in all of the specialties . . ." As a girl in Brazil, Luciana had a wonderful, caring dentist who inspired her to want to go into the field herself someday. After doing her undergraduate work at a small school in Minnesota, she checked out a number of dental schools. Iowa immediately stood out as a superior choice -- and Luciana has stood out as well. She credits much of the UI dental school's appeal to support from alumni. Not only has Luciana received the Dr. William and Bertha Olin Scholarship, she has been involved with the Student Research Program -- supported by annual gifts to the Dental Achievement Fund -- which has allowed her to conduct research and travel to meetings to present papers. Luciana says, "The alumni are so proud of the UI and they give back. And the school uses their gifts responsibly, always thinking of the good of the students. I feel very lucky."
