Since she was young, Lynna Scott has wanted to be a dentist -- maybe because her father is a dentist and one of her strongest role models. Today, she is a student in the UI College of Dentistry looking forward to joining her father in his practice after graduation.
"From the day I arrived at Iowa, I knew I was in the right place," says Lynna. "Given the reputation of the college, I expected a quality education -- but I didn't know what a warm and supportive atmosphere I would find here. It's like being a member of a big family that wants everyone to succeed."
An important factor in Lynna's success has been the scholarship support she has received -- support made available by private contributions from alumni and friends.
"One aspect of the College of Dentistry that has impressed me is its commitment to recruiting and supporting minority students," says Lynna. "The college's good reputation in this area ensures that it attracts quality applicants. Private support helps the college provide scholarship support to compete to bring these students here."
Private giving also provides faculty support that helps the college sustain its reputation for excellence in teaching across the nine dental specialty areas. In addition, it assists the college in maintaining innovative facilities such as the Simulation Clinic, which provides some of the best hands-on training in the nation.
"If you are a graduate of the UI College of Dentistry, you probably understand what I mean about the college being like a family," says Lynna. " Giving back is a great way to remain an active member of this extended family.
"When you contribute to the college, you are supporting the opportunity for future students to experience excellent education at Iowa -- and to become the very best dentistry professionals we can be."
