Tony Serfling '06 Mechanical Engineering

Hometown: Cresco, Iowa

When Tony Serfling begins work as a product engineer at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, he'll have a UI College of Engineering education filled with opportunity to thank for his budding career.

"I've been fortunate to study in a college with such excellent people and programs," says Tony.

Tony's UI experiences -- and his future -- have been enriched because of the generosity shown by contributors to the college.

He received scholarship support, both as a UI Presidential Scholar and from the Engineering Excellence Fund, that enabled him to focus on his studies and maintain a 4.0 grade point average.

And along the way, Tony has benefited from extraordinary opportunities supported by private giving. For instance, he participated in the college's Program for Enhanced Design Experience, which gave him hands-on, real-world experience collaborating with John Deere engineers and UI faculty on designing and implementing a new ripper for bulldozers.

Through the college's career fair and with help from the UI Career Center, Tony learned of and landed a full-time summer internship at John Deere in 2005.

And the college's Hanson Center for Technical Communication has helped him become a better writer and speaker -- skills he'll rely on often as an engineering professional.

Tony believes his UI education has made him an outstanding engineer . . . and something more.
