About the Graduate College
The UI Graduate College oversees more than 100 graduate programs throughout The University of Iowa. About 25 percent of UI students are registered in the Graduate College, and more than 20 percent of UI degrees awarded annually are conferred by the college. Many of the UI's graduate programs rank within the top 25 percent of programs in their disciplines nationally.
Working closely with the other UI colleges, the Graduate College has developed a tradition of access, equality, diversity, and excellence among the graduate student body. This tradition includes many "firsts," including:
- Admission of women on an equal basis with men (starting in 1851, only four years after the University was founded)
- Recognition of creative expression and artistic production as the basis for a graduate degree in lieu of a thesis or dissertation (leading to the development of the Master of Fine Arts degree)
- Establishment of the first graduate program in Creative Writing (leading to the world-renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop, International Writing Program, and Nonfiction Writing Program)
Working with almost 1,700 faculty across the UI campus, students in the Graduate College are essential to the UI's mission. They perform crucial research and help teach undergraduate students, and are themselves mentored by faculty who prepare them to carry UI distinction into the world. UI advanced-degree holders influence professional and academic disciplines in important ways, both at the UI and around the nation and world.
Private support will help the Graduate College better serve its students and the academic and professional communities by sparking development of innovative programming, helping the UI attract and retain top-quality students, and supporting faculty in teaching and research.
