Profiles in Giving: Hancher Auditorium

Peggy Scholz
Iowa City, Iowa

"I love the shows I see at Hancher. The quality of the performances is outstanding and there is great variety that includes everything from popular Broadway shows to more experimental works. My support for Hancher is selfish-I don't ever want their excellent programming to change."
-- Peggy Scholz

Peggy Scholz moved to Iowa City from Evanston, Illinois, in 1967 and made her first gift to Hancher in 1984. Having worked for 21 years as a systems analyst in the UI Roy J. And Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, she has a deep affinity for the town, the University, and especially Hancher.

"Hancher supports an unusually large number of world premieres," she says. "It's exciting to see a performance in New York or San Francisco and discover it premiered in Iowa City." She adds, "I also really like the staff. The administration, the development staff, and the Hancher Guild members are warm and genuine."

Over the years, Peggy has contributed to the Hancher Circle Fund and special funds such as the OVATION! and Millennium Campaigns.

In 2001, she made a contribution to support the commission of a piece by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. "I respect Bill T. Jones as an artist, and I'm always excited to see what he will create next."

Peggy also contributes time and energy to the Hancher Guild, a group of volunteers that provides services, including running the Hancher Guild showcase in the lobby and arranging post-performance parties for artists.

"All of the profits from showcase sales go toward Hancher's arts education programs," says Peggy, who is the Guild's president. "In 2001 we raised $35,000!

"I support Hancher because it is a tremendous asset to the state of Iowa," she adds. "Not only does it bring us great artists, but the arts-education programs give Iowa children an exposure to the arts that many kids even in large cities don't get."
