Support the UI Heart & Vascular Center
Cardiovascular disease has been the number-one killer in the United States for most of the past 100 years. One American dies of cardiovascular disease every 33 seconds. About 150,000 of those fatalities are persons under 65 years of age. If cardiovascular disease were eliminated tomorrow, it would raise the national life expectancy by almost 10 years.
The enormous demographic group born between 1944 and 1963 is now beginning to enter the age that is most at risk for all forms of cardiovascular disease. The fact that cardiovascular disease is particularly prevalent among older adults is of special concern in the state of Iowa, where our population is aging rapidly. By the year 2015, 20 percent of Iowans are projected to be 62 and older. In 2003, nearly 40 percent of all Iowa deaths were due to cardiovascular disease.
