What Gifts Have Done in the Past

Gifts to UI Hospitals and Clinics from UI staff, faculty, friends, and former patients enable the hospital to update critical equipment and facilities, make a patient's stay a little more comfortable, and provide other service enhancements. Here are a few examples of how private giving has helped physicians and other staff at UI Hospitals and Clinics do their best work:

• Over the past several years, the UI Student Dance Marathon has raised more than $1.5 million to benefit children with cancer and their families who come to UI Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. Funds raised provide crucial support for cancer research, buy state-of-the-art new medical equipment for the Children's Hospital of Iowa, and even supply "comfort" items for families --- such as stocked mini-fridges in the hospital, hotel and parking vouchers, and phone cards.
• A landmark $25 million gift from four generations of the Holden family of Williamsburg, Iowa, is providing unprecedented support for cancer research, treatment, and education at Iowa. The gift is the largest ever received for UI health care initiatives and funds the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Roland and Ruby Holden Cancer Research Laboratories. Ruby Holden, her children, and her grandchildren offered this extraordinary gift in memory of Roland Holden, who died in 1995 after a 10-year battle with leukemia.
• An anonymous donor has given $1.6 million to the UI Foundation to create the William E. Scott Educational Chair in Pediatric Ophthalmology, with the hope of encouraging more private support for pediatric ophthalmology research and education and attracting the finest faculty in this field to UI Hospitals and Clinics.

These are just several examples of the generosity that helps University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics serve residents of Iowa, the Midwest, and the nation by providing state-of-the-art patient care and research.
