Most University of Iowa law graduates are intent on passing the bar. But Charles "Chuck" M. Kierscht is intent on surpassing the bar, especially when it comes to supporting his alma mater.
As a 1962 College of Law alumnus, Kierscht credits the UI with giving him the start that led to 29 successful years with Kemper Financial Services, where he served as chairman and CEO before retiring to practice law in Chicago.
Throughout the years, he has more than repaid this "debt of gratitude" through his extraordinary commitment to The University of Iowa.
The Des Moines native made his first gift to the College of Law nearly 40 years ago and has been a Presidents Club member since 1988, supporting everything from the Museum of Natural History to UI athletics to Old Capitol.
To honor his father, a 1934 graduate of the UI College of Dentistry, Kierscht and his wife, Marion, also established the Dr. Charles N. and Florence M. Kierscht Scholarship Fund for dental students with financial need.
Most recently, Kierscht stepped up as chair of the Iowa Law School Endowment Campaign for the 21st Century. And he helped kick off the campaign with a $1 million gift to create the Charles M. and Marion J. Kierscht Law Endowment Fund, which provides faculty support, merit scholarships, and resources for the Iowa Law Library.
"I owe my professional career to The University of Iowa College of Law," Kierscht says. "I believe it is our obligation to do what we can to see that those who come after us have the opportunities provided by a University of Iowa education."
It is this kind of leadership that demonstrates why Chuck Kierscht is setting the bar for excellence at The University of Iowa.
