What Gifts Have Done in the Past
The UI College of Law could not be at the top of its field without help from generous alumni and friends. These investments allow the Iowa Law School to excel in teaching, research, and practice. Here are a few examples of how private support has helped enhance the college's reputation and resources:
- H. Blair White (1950 B.A., 1951 J.D.) and Joan V. White (1951 B.A.) of Wilmette, Illinois, established the H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Intellectual Property Law, an endowed faculty position that recognizes an outstanding scholar specializing in intellectual property law.
- A gift of $250,000 from the Raymond and Mary Baker Foundation, in honor of 1959 UI law graduate Richard Baskerville of West Des Moines, permanently established the Richard Baskerville Supreme Court Day Competition, in which a team of four UI law students argues a moot case before the Iowa Supreme Court each fall.
- A gift from Joan U. Axel (1981 J.D.) of Muscatine, Iowa, enabled students in the College of Law to begin publishing the Journal of Gender, Race, and Justice in 1996.
- Mark W. Putney (1957 J.D.) of Carefree, Arizona, gave $250,000 to establish one merit-based and one need-based scholarship in the college. The gift created the Ray Ann Putney Law Scholarship, in honor of Putney's late wife, and the Mark W. Putney Law Scholarship.
These are just a few examples of the generosity that has helped the College of Law maintain its high ranking and many areas of strengths.
