When Howard Zimmerle was 17 and growing up in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he bought his first car. While parked, the car was totaled by a drunk driver, and Howard and his father successfully sued the driver in small-claims court.
That's when Howard became hooked on the law. Now, thanks in part to a scholarship that helped lure him to the University of Iowa College of Law after earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Northern Iowa, he's delving into bigger cases.
"I've learned an amazing amount here," Howard says. "The professors are great and I've been involved with editing the Journal of Corporation Law, moot court competitions, internships, and other opportunities."
Howard loves the facilities the law school offers, such as the Law Library and study areas. He's taken advantage of the college's support systems, such as career services and the writing center. Most of all, he appreciates the overall philosophy of the college.
"We prepare for something deeper than simply being lawyers," Howard points out. "We learn to really think about the law, why it is the way it is, how it's changed. It's fascinating."
From tuition assistance to helping maintain excellent programming and facilities, private support is giving Howard -- the first in his family to attend college -- an experience that will positively shape the rest of his life, something for which he's grateful.
"It means a lot to know there are people willing to help out," Howard says.
