The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The original and largest undergraduate college at The University of Iowa, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is uniquely comprehensive, comprising:

  • Fine arts
  • Humanities
  • Interdisciplinary studies
  • Mathematics
  • Natural sciences
  • Social sciences
  • Many professional degree programs

The college's diverse curriculum focuses on the universal skills students need to understand the past and flourish in the future: How to think and analyze, how to ask significant questions and find their solutions, and how to express oneself through speech, writing, and the arts.

The college is composed of 40 academic units and offers nearly 60 undergraduate majors. (Read more about the college's departments and programs.) Two of the UI's three first-ranked programs are in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and many of its other departments, programs, and specialty areas have national reputations for excellence. (Learn more about the college's areas of special distinction.)

With more than 600 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and 16,000 students, the college awards 70 percent of all UI undergraduate degrees and nearly 50 percent of the University's graduate degrees.

The college administers the General Education Program, in which the other undergraduate colleges participate, for first- and second-year students and offers many courses that are prerequisites for degrees outside the college. The college teaches every one of the 20,000 undergraduate students enrolled at The University of Iowa.

With its unparalleled curricular diversity and its commitment to excellence in teaching and research, the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers an educational foundation that will serve our graduates, the state of Iowa, and all of society well.
