What Gifts Have Done in the Past
Private support has enabled the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to provide a first-rate education for UI students, top-notch research across the spectrum of the liberal arts and sciences, and crucial services to the state of Iowa. Here are just a few examples of how gifts have helped the college fulfill its mission:
- Frank A. Iosue of Tucson, Arizona, established the Mary Susan Morse Iosue Memorial Scholarship Endowment in French, named in memory of his wife, who died in 1998. Frank Iosue earned an M.F.A. degree from the Writers' Workshop in 1978, and his wife received a B.A. degree in French from the UI in 1976. The gift will support an outstanding student majoring in French who is emphasizing literary studies.
- The Mansfield Charitable Foundation of Belle Plaine, Iowa, gave $500,000 to support two exciting facilities projects. The Mansfield Media Theatre in the new School of Art and Art History building, to be constructed on Riverside Drive as part of the Iowa arts campus, will be an interdisciplinary visual and performance arts facility. The Mansfield Director's Office in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, in the upcoming new addition to the Workshop's Dey House headquarters, was also supported by the Mansfield gift.
- Dewey B. Stuit, dean of the college from 1949 to 1977 and professor emeritus of psychology, created the Dewey B. and Velma P. Stuit Professorship in Psychology. Endowed faculty positions such as this help attract and retain top scholars and help leverage funding from other external sources such as foundations and government agencies.
- The Department of Biological Sciences in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences received a $700,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, Iowa, to establish the interdisciplinary Roy J. Carver Center for Comparative Genomics. Housed in the Biology Building, the center will be one of the first of its kind in the nation and will establish the University as a leader in the emerging discipline of comparative genomics.
These are just several examples of the generosity that has helped the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offer an educational foundation that serves our graduates, the state of Iowa, and all of society well.
