"I'm looking forward to seeing where my education takes me. It's great that the college makes it so easy to explore different things while still focusing on my major."
When Cassie Gonzales received the UI's Opportunity at Iowa scholarship, given to students of minority heritage with high academic achievement, she jumped at the chance to come to the UI to study anthropology.
"I love to study people," the Tucson, Arizona, native says.
To Cassie's delight, she's found that the interdisciplinary structure of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is allowing her to study people in more ways than one.
In addition to the coursework for her anthropology major, Cassie is exploring other disciplines. She's studying playwriting through the Department of Theatre Arts. She's taking classes through the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. And with Cassie's curious mind and the almost inexhaustible offerings of the college, only time will tell where her interests take her next.
A voracious reader and a talented artist -- she teaches children's art classes through the Tucson parks department during the summer -- Cassie has found other projects of the college to her liking as well. She's enjoyed the Iowa New Play Festival, for instance, and she attends readings made possible by the Iowa Writers' Workshop and the Department of English.
"It's been a fun experience," Cassie says. "I'm looking forward to seeing where my education takes me. It's great that the college makes it so easy to explore different things while still focusing on my major."
Cassie is precisely the kind of bright, eager student who thrives in the wide-ranging creative and intellectual atmosphere of the college. And that comprehensive learning environment is made possible in large part by the thousands of contributors who give each year to the college or one or more of its departments.
People studying people, in many different ways: That's what the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is all about. And Cassie's ready to dig in.
