About the College
The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is a world leader in medical education and research, and partners with UI Hospitals and Clinics to provide first-rate patient care to thousands of patients each year from across Iowa and beyond.
The UI Carver College of Medicine was the first co-educational medical school in the U.S.; today, faculty teach more than 620 medical students and 250 associated sciences students. Half of Iowa’s 5,000 practicing physicians received some or all of their medical education at the UI. In addition to undergraduate and graduate medical education, the college offers some of the nation's most distinctive graduate, professional, and interdisciplinary programs.
UI Carver College of Medicine researchers are leaders in investigating causes and cures for cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, hearing loss and deafness, muscular dystrophy, and macular degeneration, among many other diseases. The UI ranks 12th among public research universities in National Institutes of Health grants.
Private support has been essential to the college's success. The college is named in recognition of the extraordinary generosity of Roy J. (1909-1981) and Lucille A. Carver of Muscatine, Iowa, who--along with the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust--have given more than $98 million to the UI Foundation to support the college. Other examples of philanthropy in action in the UI Carver College of Medicine include:
