What Gifts Have Done in the Past

Gifts to the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine from alumni and friends enable the college to provide scholarships to worthy students, update critical equipment and facilities, help students attend professional conferences and meetings, and more. Here are a few examples of how private giving has helped the students and faculty of the college do their best work:

• Donald H. Beisner (1964 M.D., 1970 M.S.) and Judith A. Beisner (1961 B.A.) of Springfield, Missouri, gave $1.5 million to the UI Carver College of Medicine. Their gift was used to create four medical student scholar awards, renovate three lecture halls in the Bowen Science Building, and create an equipment fund in the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
• A $50,000 gift from the late M. Alice Sahs (1927 B.S.P.E.) in memory of her husband, Dr. Adolph L Sahs (1931 M.D.), former head of the UI Department of Neurology in the UI Carver College of Medicine, created the Adolph L. Sahs, M.D., Memorial Visiting Lectureship in Neurology, designed to bring a renowned lecturer in neurology to the UI campus each year.
• More than 3,300 UI Carver College of Medicine alumni, faculty, staff, corporate friends, and other organizations committed more than $30 million to "Seeking Knowledge for Healing," the college's recent facilities and endowment campaign. Money raised by this campaign went, in part, to the construction of the stellar new Medical Education and Research Facility on the health sciences campus.

These are just several examples of the generosity that has helped the UI Carver College of Medicine achieve its three missions -- excellence in education, research, and patient care.
