Melanie Bone '01 Medicine

Hometown: Johnston, Iowa

"The program here is excellent. The college is incredibly supportive of us, and the faculty encourage students to work together. When I was doing rotations away from the University, I realized how truly special the UI is. It's a nurturing environment..."

For Melanie, a medical career is a given. Being a trusted, compassionate physician is how she hopes to be the most help to the most people. And that's what matters most to this fourth-year UI medical student.

Melanie's being helped in turn by the friends and alumni of the Carver College of Medicine who offer their financial support. She's the recipient of the Harold S. Brady Scholarship, given in memory of a former UI medical student, which has allowed her to focus on her studies and keep her student-loan debts manageable.

And she benefits from the high quality of technology and equipment in the college's facilities, from taking part in community outreach efforts, and from the research that makes the UI a national health care leader -- all the types of initiatives that are made possible by annual gifts to the UI Carver College of Medicine Development Fund.

As the first in her family to go to college, Melanie says this support has meant the world to her. And she looks forward to someday giving back to the college so future students can have the types of experiences she's had -- it's another way to help others. "It's important to keep the cycle going," Melanie says, "and I want to be a part of that."
