Travis Mattson -- the son of Greg and Sandy Mattson of Alta, Iowa -- knows well the power of private support for future physicians. Over the course of their education, medical students accrue huge debts, which can severely limit career choices and financial well-being for young graduates.
Fortunately, because of the generosity of contributors to the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Travis has received a scholarship every year he's been at the college.
In immediate terms, those scholarships have added up to about $11,000 in assistance. And the third-year medical student points out that when interest over the duration of a loan is added, the financial impact is even greater.
"It means so much to students to have complete strangers offer that kind of help," Travis says. "It helps paint a more positive picture as we move into our careers."
Beyond the economic assistance, scholarships represent moral support. As Travis puts it, "It's like a pat on the back. Most of the college's contributors have been there, they know what it's like, and they want to help today's students."
Travis looks forward to continuing the tradition of selfless concern for successive generations. "I hope to be able to help future students in the same way some day," he says.
And because of the support he's received, his own future is immeasurably brighter.
