LaKesha Randolph '07 Medicine

Hometown: East Chicago, Indiana

Talented, committed students like LaKesha Randolph are exactly what the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine needs to fulfill its mandate of educating tomorrow's top physicians.

And a first-rate medical school like the UI Carver College of Medicine is precisely what LaKesha needs to establish the fulfilling and meaningful career she envisions.

Fortunately, the Albert and Constance Anderson Scholarship, established through an estate gift from the Andersons in appreciation for Iowa's medical college, was there to make the connection possible for the 1999 graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

"When I was working in the pharmaceutical industry before beginning medical school," LaKesha says, "a number of doctors told me that coming to Iowa would open doors for me because of its great reputation. They said it would give me an edge."

Coming from East Chicago, Indiana, LaKesha wasn't sure what to expect from a town in Iowa with significantly less racial diversity. She was impressed, though, by the support she received from individuals in the college who helped smooth the way, and has come to feel comfortable at Iowa.

Now she wants to help other students make the transition. She's active in the Student National Medical Association, an organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color, and she works with the college's admissions office to recruit and retain minority students.

"Coming to Iowa was the right choice, and I couldn't have done it without my scholarship," says LaKesha. "I'll get the best education, and I won't have to leave with huge debt. I'm thankful for the opportunity."
