Megan Groff '08 Medicine

Hometown: Ankeny, Iowa

Private support for the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will help make it possible for Megan Groff to follow her heart.

When she graduates, this UI medical student knows she will be able to choose a medical specialty based on her genuine interest and enthusiasm, rather than on financial considerations, thanks to scholarship support from generous contributors.

"Scholarship support is so important for students like me because it gives us freedom from some of the overwhelming debt we'll face after we finish our training," says the Ankeny native, who received her B.S. degree from the UI in 2004.

Groff is the recipient of the Kelch-Parker Scholarship, established in 2002 by Dr. Robert P. Kelch, former dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine and former UI vice president for statewide health services, and his wife, Jeri Anne Kelch, in honor of their parents, Paul and Iona B. Kelch and James G. and W. Mae Parker.

"Student scholarships truly are a gift," Megan says. "They are the gift of peace of mind. They are a reward for accomplishments and hard work. And they are genuinely appreciated."

Megan hopes to show her appreciation for this reward by continuing to excel in her studies -- and by remaining a student leader within the college. In doing so, she is helping the UI Carver College of Medicine fulfill its mission of educating the future's top physicians.

With the help of private support, Megan can go on to become one such physician -- and she can do so in whatever medical field best fits her talents and passion.

"I understand that my scholarship is a reward for hard work and leadership, and I feel honored and grateful for that. I plan to do everything possible, now and in the future, to show how grateful I am."
