of Engineering receives $100,000 gift on April 17 'Asphalt Recognition
Day'

IOWA CITY -- If you drive Iowa's highways, you may
be interested to learn that the University of Iowa College of Engineering
will celebrate April 17 as "Asphalt Recognition Day" with lectures and
a gift to the College by a major industry association.
In particular, officers of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI)
will present the College with a $100,000 teaching and research gift,
given through the UI Foundation, and deliver a series of talks by asphalt
contractors.
Michael J. Kvach, APAI executive vice president, says that the UI College
of Engineering is a logical site for asphalt research.
"The Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa is proud to have partnered with
the University of Iowa to help provide their students with the highest
level of education, specifically in the field of Hot Mix Asphalt technology.
APAI is committed to the enhancement of Hot Mix Asphalt education through
the funding of Iowa Scholarships, purchases of laboratory equipment,
and training of professors," Kvach says.
Hosin David Lee, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering
and the UI Public Policy Center, says that the gift is most welcome
and that the College of Engineering plans to use it in developing its
new Construction Materials Laboratory. The gift from APAI will be used
to purchase asphalt-testing equipment for teaching and research.
The lab is located in the College's Seamans Center for the Engineering
Arts and Sciences, which currently is involved in a major $31 million
building modernization project. The modernization project makes optimum
use of instructional technology, while retaining the attractive "small
college" personality for which UI engineering education is renowned.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions
to all areas of the university. Foundation staff work with alumni and
friends to generate funds for scholarships, professorships, facilities
improvements, equipment purchases, research and other UI initiatives.
