IOWA CITY -- Margaret Silber
Reese of Iowa City and Erik J. Thurman of Solon, Iowa, have joined the
staff of the University of Iowa Foundation to assist in fund-raising
efforts for Hancher Auditorium, the Museum of Art, and performing arts
programs within the UI College of Liberal Arts.
Reese, who has served as director of marketing
and community relations for Mercy Hospital in Iowa City since 1994,
has been named associate director of development for Hancher Auditorium
and the Division of Performing Arts. A 1977 UI graduate, Reese has held
leadership positions in several nonprofit organizations, including the
Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, the Jane Boyd Community House in Cedar
Rapids, and St. Catherine's High School in Racine, Wis. She is an active
community volunteer for the United Way of Johnson County, the Johnson
County SAFE KIDS Coalition, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce,
the Iowa Children's Museum and other organizations.
Thurman has worked as a marketing representative
for Federated Mutual Insurance Companies of Owatonna, Minn., since July
1999 and will become the foundation's assistant director of development
for Hancher Auditorium and the UI Museum of Art. Prior to his graduation
from the UI in 1999, Thurman worked as a caller/specialist, program
assistant and assistant supervisor in the foundation's Telefund program.
He is an active volunteer for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization.
"We are delighted that Margaret and Erik are
joining our fund-raising team," said Michael Kingan, director of development
for the College of Liberal Arts, who also oversees fund-raising efforts
for Hancher and the Museum of Art. "We are confident that their experience
and their familiarity with the UI and the local community will result
in significantly enhanced levels of private support for the University's
world-class programs in the performing and visual arts."
Kingan explained that the recent creation in
August 2000 of the Division of Performing Arts-encompassing the Department
of Dance, School of Music and Department of Theatre Arts-provided an
opportunity for the foundation to restructure its arts fund-raising
team. Reese will focus her attention on major-gift fund raising for
Hancher and programs in dance, theatre and music in the College of Liberal
Arts. Thurman will concentrate on securing corporate sponsorships for
programming at Hancher and the Museum of Art, as well as assisting with
events for contributors. Major gift solicitation on behalf of the museum
and the UI School of Art and Art History is being handled by Kristin
Loupee, the foundation's associate director of development for the College
of Liberal Arts and the Museum of Art.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel
for private contributions to all areas of the university. Foundation
staff work with alumni and friends to generate funds for scholarships,
professorships, facilities improvements, equipment purchases, research
and other UI initiatives.
