UI law school's
Nonprofit Resource Center receives Carver Trust grant
Posted January

IOWA CITY -- A grant of $240,000
from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust will provide support for the
new Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center, a university-wide interdisciplinary
project initiated by the UI College of Law to provide information, education
and management services to nonprofit organizations across Iowa. The
grant from the Carver Trust was made as a part of the Iowa Law School's
current fund-raising campaign, which continues to progress toward its
$25 million goal.
"We are deeply grateful to the Carver Trust
for their start-up grant to help launch this significant statewide outreach
program created at the University of Iowa," said N. William Hines, dean
of the UI College of Law. "Iowa's nonprofit organizations work in every
community and, for the most part, are small institutions widely dispersed
throughout the state. The Carver grant will enable the center to launch
services that will provide access to information and courses designed
to strengthen the operational capacity of nonprofit organizations."
Dean Hines also noted that major foundations
like the Carver Trust will indirectly reap benefits from the work of
the center in the form of enhanced performance of the nonprofits that
are often the recipients of grants from the Carver Trust and other charitable
organizations.
The center's co-coordinator Richard Koontz
said, "After completing a survey of Iowa nonprofit
organizations, we now have a valuable picture of the nonprofit community
in Iowa and the ways in which this population can benefit from the center."
The Carver Trust grant will allow the center to establish a toll-free
information number, create a monograph series that will cover key issues
for nonprofit organizations, design an informational Web site and establish
a resource library.
The Roy J. Carver Charitable
Trust was created through a bequest from Roy J. Carver, a Muscatine
industrialist and philanthropist who died in 1981. General education,
scientific research, scholarships and issues related to the needs of
youth are the program areas of greatest interest to the Carver Charitable
Trust. The Carver Trust is a generous contributor to many UI programs.
The UI Foundation, the
university's comprehensive fund-raising organization, is the preferred
channel of support for contributions to all areas of the university,
including the Iowa Law School Foundation. UI Foundation staff work with
alumni and friends to generate funds for scholarships, professorships,
facilities improvements, equipment purchases, research and other UI
initiatives.
