Volunteers
join campaign leadership team

IOWA CITY -- In recent months, four loyal and generous alumni have joined
the National Campaign Steering Committee charged with leading the
University's comprehensive campaign, currently in its quiet phase
and set for public launch in April 2002.
Lyle Bighley (1963 M.S., 1966 Ph.D.) of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, will
serve as chair of the College of Pharmacy's fund-raising efforts within
the campus-wide campaign. William H. Burger (1963 J.D.) of Iowa City
will lead campaign efforts on behalf of the UI Libraries. Kevin Roberg
(1973 B.S.) of Medina, Minn., will serve as co-chair of the campaign
for the College of Liberal Arts. And Stephen Ummel (1965 M.A.) of
Lake Forest, Ill., will head campaign efforts on behalf of the College
of Public Health.
Even in its early stages the comprehensive campaign is already having
an impact throughout the UI campus and-even more important-across
the state of Iowa and beyond. And according to UI Foundation President
Michael New, that's exactly what UI campaign planners envisioned.
"In a campaign of this magnitude, it's easy to focus on the numbers-for
example, how many new scholarships, professorships, and research funds
will be will created," New explains. "But what's really driving our
efforts, and what's inspiring contributors to make truly transformational
gifts, is what those new funds will mean-not only to individual students
and faculty, but to all citizens of the state of Iowa."
The recent $25 million Holden family gift to the UI
Cancer Center is just one example, says New. "This is a case where
an Iowa family was inspired by the University's commitment to excellence,
and by pioneering UI research that may someday lead to a cure for
cancer. The Holdens view their generosity as a catalyst for expanding
and accelerating that research, so more breakthroughs in diagnosis
and treatment can occur, right here in Iowa. And that will translate
to improved care for patients in Iowa City, as well as throughout
the state, nation, and world."
Increased funding for research is one of many featured objectives
of the campaign, for which a final dollar goal has not yet been determined.
Other major objectives of the six-year campaign (1999-2004) are to
substantially increase the number of UI merit- and need-based scholarships;
create 100 new endowed faculty chairs and professorships; support
eight new educational and research facilities; fund outreach and service
programs to benefit individuals, families, and communities throughout
the state of Iowa; build the UI's endowment; and launch new initiatives
in the arts, sciences, business, health care, and other fields.
Members of the National Campaign Steering Committee are assisting
the UI and UI Foundation staff in guiding the fund-raising effort.
In addition to the new members noted above, the committee consists
of alumni and friends from around the country. Led by co-chairs Marvin
Pomerantz (1952 B.S.C.) of Des Moines and Mary Louise Petersen (1951
B.S.) of Harlan, Iowa, committee members-in addition to the four new
members cited above-include Samuel L. Becker (1947 B.A., 1949 M.A.,
1953 Ph.D.), Iowa City; Sue W. Cannon (1969 B.B.A.), Hinsdale, Ill.;
Ross D. Christensen (1964 D.D.S., 1966 M.S.), Waterloo, Iowa; J. Hayden
Fry, North Liberty, Iowa; Thomas R. Hanson (1960 B.S.M.E.), Hinsdale,
Ill.; Ronald W. Holden and Arlene M. Holden, Williamsburg, Iowa; Charles
M. Kierscht (1962 B.A., J.D.), Hinsdale, Ill.; William A. Krause (1957
B.A.), Des Moines; Linda Liechty Mordaunt, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Gary
F. Seamans (1971 B.S.E.E.), St. Charles, Ill.; Mary Joy Stead, Scottsdale,
Ariz.; Henry B. Tippie (1949 B.S.C.), Austin, Texas; Robert W. Verhille
(1955 B.S.C.), Solon, Iowa; Alan M. Waxenberg (1956 B.A.), New York
City; and Herbert A. Wilson and Janice A. Wilson, Coralville, Iowa.
Additional committee members will be added in the coming months. Many
of those volunteers will lead unit campaigns in individual colleges
and other UI major programs. Others will assist with the campus campaign-focusing
on UI faculty, staff, and students-and on fund-raising efforts targeted
at corporate contributors. For more information about the UI comprehensive
campaign, contact us at uiowa-foundation@uiowa.edu.
