Seventh annual Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic is Sunday

Posted June 20, 2001

IOWA CITY -- This Sunday, June 24, community members will have an opportunity to enjoy a round of golf with old and new friends, help advance cancer research and women's athletics at the University of Iowa, and remember one of the UI's finest Hawkeye athletes-all in one event.

The seventh annual Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic is set for Sunday, June 24, beginning at 7:15 a.m. at Finkbine Golf Course, and the community is invited to participate.

A four-person best shot competition, the tournament will benefit two areas at the UI: the Kris Rogers Memorial Cancer Fund in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Kris Rogers Memorial Scholarship Fund in Women's Athletics. In its six previous years, the tournament has raised more than $40,000 through the UI Foundation to support both funds.

Kris Rogers was an exceptional UI Hawkeye, playing both basketball and softball from 1976 to 1982. Inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1992, Rogers was a successful Cedar Rapids businesswoman who was once featured in the magazine Complete Woman.

She lost her fight to melanoma at age 36 and has become an example of strength and perseverance for the patients, athletes, women and friends who honor her. Rogers enjoyed playing golf, so organizers of the benefit felt a golf tournament would be a good way to celebrate her life and achievements.

"We have had a wonderful turnout in the past and have found that this golf classic is a great way for all of us to support cancer research and women's sports on a local level," said Dorothy Rogers, mother of Kris Rogers.

A $75 registration fee is required to participate in the golf event. This will cover the cost of greens fee, a cart, prizes and the cookout following the competition. Gifts made to either fund will be appreciated. For more information, contact Dorothy Rogers at (319) 338-4371.
