UI College of Pharmacy receives gift from Walgreen Co.
Posted October 1, 2001
IOWA CITY -- Thanks to a $50,000 gift from the Walgreen Co. to support the UI College of Pharmacy's new student activity center, the Walgreen Meeting Room will be named in the company's honor.
"Our faculty and most especially our students are very excited in anticipation of this new facility and are extremely grateful to Walgreen for its generous gift," said Jordan Cohen, dean of the UI College of Pharmacy. "The center, which will become the hub of the pharmacy program, promises to greatly enhance the quality of life for our students as they pursue their pharmacy studies," he added.
Dawn R. DiLullo, manager of pharmacy relations at Walgreen Co., said, "We have hired many Iowa students over the years, and they have proven exceptionally well-prepared-they are knowledgeable and create an excellent rapport with customers. We chose to support this new activity center at the UI because we always look to provide support that will directly affect students. Knowing they will be using the Walgreen Meeting Room every day was one of the main reasons we made this gift."
Construction of the new student center is scheduled to begin this fall and involves renovating the former dispensing laboratory, centrally located in the UI College of Pharmacy building. The renovation was initiated in response to the changing face of pharmacy training, which involves much more small group and collaborative learning among students, as well as computer access to the latest drug information literature.
The center will feature computer stations with web access, individual locker space, a general study area and five small conference rooms where students can work on group projects and the college's seven professional student organizations can meet.
The Walgreen gift is part of the university's planned comprehensive campaign to advance the UI's strategic goals for the years 2000-2005. The campaign, which is in its early stages and for which no final dollar goal has been established, will be conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation and will raise funds to substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty chairs and professorships; fund outreach and service programs to benefit individuals, families and communities throughout the state of Iowa; support new educational and research facilities; build the UI's endowment; and launch new initiatives in the arts, sciences, business, health care and other fields.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university.
