New journalism building planned for UI

IOWA CITY -- A new classroom building that will house the University of Iowa school of journalism is on the drawing board for the UI campus. The University of Iowa will present the Board of Regents, State of Iowa with preliminary plans for the three story, 42,600 square foot structure, which will hold some 14 classrooms, as well as broadcast studios, laboratories, offices, meeting spaces, and a newspaper office. The Regents will consider the request during its April 17 meeting in Council Bluffs. The board previously approved project planning for the building at its January 2000 meeting. The new building will be located on the new Washington Street pedestrian plaza, between the Becker Communications Studies Building, the Main Library and the English-Philosophy Building. A second-level walkway will connect the building to the Becker building. George Hollins, UI director of design and construction services, says the building is designed to accommodate the increasing overlap between print, broadcast, and internet news delivery. "Broadcast studios, newspaper offices, and cyber spaces are integrated in the design, in much the same way they're integrated in the profession," he says. Much of the building is dedicated to journalism, but most of its classrooms may be scheduled with classes from almost any discipline, Hollins says. "We're always in need of classrooms on this campus, especially ones that are equipped with more recent technology, as these will be." Construction on the new building is set to begin November 2002, pending state appropriation. Completion is expected by the end of July 2004. Estimated cost of the project is $15 million.
