UI public radio stations WSUI/KSUI raise $165,000 in fund drive
Posted April 30, 2002
IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa's public radio stations, WSUI 910 AM and KSUI 91.7 FM, raised more than $165,000 during their spring on-air fund drive April 20-26.
WSUI/KSUI listeners made 1,710 pledges during the seven-day drive, said John Monick, director of Broadcasting Services at the UI.
"I thank our listeners for their contributions and pledges and for their continued support of public radio," he said.
Several area businesses and individuals also made challenge pledges, encouraging listeners to match their donation during a specified time during the drive. Special broadcasts of "Car Talk," "Fresh Air," "A Prairie Home Companion," "St. Paul Sunday" and other popular public radio programs were aired throughout the week in support of the drive.
The fund drive was held to raise money for the UI's public radio stations, which are continuing to feel the impact of state budget cuts and rising costs of operation.
Contributions from listeners provide support for national programs such as "Morning Edition," "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Fresh Air," as well as locally produced classical music and news programs such as "Iowa Talks."
Monick also thanked a fund-raising team of WSUI/KSUI staff and volunteers for their efforts.
The first fund drive for WSUI/KSUI, October 13-19, 2001, raised more than $200,000 as part of a coordinated campaign among public radio stations across Iowa and the United States to support public radio.
Pledges can still be submitted online at http://www.givetoiowa.org/ksui or http://www.givetoiowa.org/wsui; checks can also be sent to the Friends of WSUI/KSUI, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa, 52244.
