Fraternal Order of Eagles supports diabetes research at the UI

IOWA CITY -- The State Fraternal Order of Eagles and Ladies Auxiliary has given $107,000 to the University of Iowa Division of Endocrinology in the Department of Internal Medicine to help support diabetes research. The group gave an additional $5,000 each to the nephrology and cardiology divisions, also to support research. The $107,000 gift will establish an endowment called the Iowa State Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Management Fund to be used for education and training in diabetes management. The Eagles presented the gift to Robert Bar, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Endocrinology in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, at the Eagles' annual meeting in Cedar Rapids in late June. The State Fraternal Order of Eagles, a charitable organization formed more than 100 years ago with 40 clubs in Iowa and 1,700 nationwide, selected diabetes management as their philanthropic project for the past year. The project was titled "CHOICES: Living Well with Diabetes." The Iowa Order of Eagles, whose slogan is "People helping people," raised approximately $85,000 in support of diabetes management. Further contributions from their national organization made up the rest of the gift. "We will use the Eagles' gift to improve care of people with diabetes and to try to prevent diabetes in those at high risk for developing the disease," said Bar, who also is a staff physician and researcher with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City. "The State Fraternal Order of Eagles has always been very supportive of research and care of diabetics. We appreciate their longstanding interest in diabetes, and we-along with the more than 150,000 Iowans with diabetes and their families-thank the Eagles very much for their support." Pete Schmieding, past president of the State Fraternal Order of Eagles, said his organization chose to support diabetes research because the disease is very common. "It's not age-specific and everyone is susceptible. We wanted to try to help as many people as possible with this gift," he said. The Eagles' gift is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment, and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
