Hearst Foundation gift to bring visiting professionals to UI journalism school

Posted January 22, 2002

IOWA CITY -- Thanks to a $200,000 gift from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation of New York City to the University of Iowa Foundation, UI students and faculty in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be visited each year by distinguished professionals from a variety of journalistic fields.

The Hearst Visiting Professional Program will bring journalists working in newspapers, magazines, broadcast, new media and other areas of journalism to the school for a period of one to five days to lecture, conduct workshops and provide other educational opportunities. The first visiting professionals sponsored by the endowed program are scheduled to come to the UI campus in the 2002-2003 academic year.

Venise Berry, interim director of the journalism school in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, expressed her appreciation to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for helping advance UI students' education.

"This program will give our students the chance to learn from top professionals representing a number of popular communication fields," Berry said. "First-hand instruction from established professionals is priceless and allows us to enhance our curriculum. With this gift, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation is helping to expand our visiting professional program, currently limited to the field of print media, to include other important areas of interest to our students."

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation is named for William Randolph Hearst, who helped shape modern journalism through his newspaper and magazine empire in the late 1800s and first half of the last century. The foundation is a philanthropic organization that operates separately from the Hearst Corporation, which includes newspapers and other media holdings nationwide.

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation gift is part of the University of Iowa's planned comprehensive campaign to advance the UI's strategic goals for the years 2000-2005. The campaign, which is in its early stages and for which no final dollar goal has been established, will be conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation and will raise funds to substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty chairs and professorships; fund outreach and service programs to benefit individuals, families and communities throughout the state of Iowa; support new educational and research facilities; build the UI's endowment; and launch new initiatives in the arts, sciences, business, health care and other fields.

The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university.
