Kelches establish new UI medical student scholarship

Posted January 29, 2002

IOWA CITY -- Dr. Robert P. Kelch, Dean of the University of Iowa College of Medicine and vice president for statewide health services, along with his spouse, Jeri Anne Kelch, have announced their commitment to establish the Kelch/Parker Scholarship for medical students at the UI.

The Kelch/Parker Scholarship will be funded by a $60,000 gift from the Kelches to the UI Foundation. The Kelches established this fund to honor their parents, Paul and Iona B. Kelch and James G. and W. Mae Parker.

The Kelch/Parker scholarship will support one or more annual scholarships for UI medical students, and will be awarded based on both student merit and financial need. The first Kelch/Parker scholarship award was made this past fall.

"Support for medical student scholarships is needed desperately. As a former recipient of a scholarship, I know how valuable such support is -- both financially and emotionally," Kelch said. "Jeri and I wished to recognize the enormous love and support given to us by our beloved parents. Through the Kelch/Parker scholarship, our parents will be remembered forever, and that gives us great pleasure."

Within the university's planned comprehensive fund-raising campaign, the College of Medicine has a goal of raising $20 million in endowed student scholarships. The UI campaign, which is in its early stages and for which no final dollar goal has been established, will be conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation, and will raise funds to substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty chairs and professorships; fund outreach and service programs to benefit individuals, families and communities throughout the state of Iowa; support new educational and research facilities; build the UI's endowment; and launch new initiatives in the arts, sciences, business, health care and other fields.

The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university.
