Fincham family establishes annual neurology award at Iowa

IOWA CITY -- The family of the late Dr. Richard W. Fincham, professor emeritus in the Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, recently announced the establishment of an annual award in Fincham's name to a deserving fourth-year neurology resident at Iowa. Through a $50,000 gift to The University of Iowa Foundation, Linda Fincham and her children, David, Benjamin and Nancy, will permanently endow the Dr. Richard W. Fincham Resident Award fund. Dr. Jody Neer, a senior neurology resident from Indianapolis, Ind., is the first recipient of the Fincham award. The $1,000 award was presented to Neer at the annual neurology residents' dinner, held recently at the University Athletic Club. Neer is slated to begin private practice in Fort Wayne, Ind., this month. Neer was selected to receive the Fincham award by a group of faculty, nurses and staff from the UI neurology department. He was recognized not only for his academic excellence but also for his ability "to convey a warm and compassionate relationship with patients" -- qualities specified by the Fincham family when they created this award fund in honor of the late Dr. Fincham. Dr. Antonio R. Damasio, Maurice Van Allen/UI Foundation Distinguished Professor of Neurology and head of neurology at the UI, said Dr. Fincham was a role model for medical students and neurology residents. "He was a thoughtful and compassionate physician whose manner toward patients, families, colleagues and staff was revered by all. The Fincham Award will distinguish graduating neurology residents who exemplify the personal virtues of Dr. Fincham. The department is pleased that Dr. Neer, who worked with Dr. Fincham early in his residency, is the first recipient of this award." Mrs. Fincham added, "We as a family are very pleased to be able to make available this award to recognize the development of patient care, an aspect of medicine that Dick demonstrated so well." Dr. Fincham was a neurology professor at the University of Iowa from 1962 to 1997, at which time he was named professor emeritus. He earned his M.D. degree from the UI in 1956 and completed his neurology residency there in 1962. Dr. Fincham died in November 2000. The Dr. Richard W. Fincham Award fund will be used annually not only to help one fourth-year neurology resident with his or her educational expenses, but in the future may also be used to acquire neurology texts, journals, computer programs and other educational resources for residents, fellows and faculty within the Department of Neurology. The Fincham award is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best.
