UI graduate students receive Stanley fellowships for research abroad

IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa International Programs has awarded 10 Stanley Fellowships for Graduate Student Research Abroad in 2002-2003. The $2,000 Stanley Fellowships are intended to encourage UI graduate students to pursue foreign research and career interests by supporting preliminary field research abroad. Students in all fields of study are encouraged to apply. The Stanley Fellowships were established through the UI Foundation, the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university. Fellowship winners are listed alphabetically by hometown with Iowa hometowns first. IOWA CORALVILLE: Grant McCall, an M.A. student in archaeology, will travel to Namibia this summer to conduct archaeological fieldwork in the Nhomadon Valley of the Kaudon National Park in northeastern Namibia. DAVENPORT: Anna Sluz, a doctoral student in geography, will travel to Ukraine this summer to explore to what degree and through what mechanism religious organizations influence social and political activities in the name of Ukrainian national identity and civil society. IOWA CITY: Richard Mtisi, a doctoral student in history, will travel to the Same River Valley of Mozambique and Zimbabwe this summer to study the history of people-environment relationships in a geographical area that is not defined by a political boundary; Margaret Schwartz, an M.F.A. student in non-fiction writing, will conduct research in Argentina this summer to examine manuscripts and artifacts belonging to the Argentine avant-garde writer Macedonio Fernandez for the purpose of biographical work; Benjamin Willett, a doctoral student in anthropology, will travel to Guatemala this summer to study how Mayan organizations actively blend rich cultural traditions with modern perspectives and technologies to create a new Mayan identity. WEST BRANCH: Eleonore Lee, an M.F.A. student in non-fiction writing, is traveling to England, France and The Netherlands this summer to gather historical information on pre-industrial papermaking by visiting the Royal Library in Amsterdam and paper mills and museums in France and England. CALIFORNIA BAKERSFIELD: Marty Gould, a doctoral student in English, will travel to England this summer to conduct a search of Britain's major nineteenth-century drama archives in order to locate and study plays related to empire. MICHIGAN HOLLY: Joseph Mason, a doctoral student in history, will conduct research in the Solomon Islands to determine the environmental impact of the second World War on the region. NEW YORK ROCHESTER: Erica Bleeg, an M.F.A. student in non-fiction writing, will travel to Benin Republic, West Africa, this summer. While there, she will meet and collaborate with friends and colleagues to achieve a level of emotional and sensory immediacy that will strengthen the quality of narrator and character for her book, "The Marks of Machetes and Wings," which will also form her thesis. CANADA ONTARIO: Janet Gardner, a doctoral student in anthropology, will travel this summer to collect data from late Paleolithic human skeletal samples located in museums at several locations in central Europe. Her research will examine these fossils to find evidence of disease and trauma in Neanderthals and early modern humans. Contact Information
