UI Foundation publications and web site win six national awards

Posted June 27, 2002

IOWA CITY -- Fund-raising materials produced by the University of Iowa Foundation communications staff have received six national awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) of Washington, D.C.

Foundation staff received CASE silver medals for the UI Foundation web site, www.uiowafoundation.org; "Building on Strengths," a dedication brochure for the UI's Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences; and "Taking Flight: The World of Birds," a publication honoring contributors to the William and Eleanor Hagebock Hall of Birds in the UI Museum of National History.

Bronze medals were awarded for "A Home for the Hawkeyes," a fund-raising piece for the Hawkeye Athletic/Recreation Facilities Complex; "Reaching Up, Reaching Out," the 2000 Annual Report on Giving to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, College of Public Health, and UI Hospitals and Clinics; and materials for the annual Presidents Club Assembly, which honors the university's most generous contributors.

UI Foundation senior vice president Alan Swanson said the number of awards reflects the quality of the Foundation's communications staff.

"Of the 274 entries in the Individual Development Publications category, only 18 received medals, and the work of our group accounted for 20 percent of that number," Swanson said. "Of the 193 entrants in the Web Sites category, only 14 received medals, including the UI Foundation. These numbers are a testament to our team of talented, dedicated and highly creative individuals."

Swanson continued, "While the CASE awards confirm the quality of our efforts in the context of national peers, what's most gratifying is the effectiveness of these materials as fund-raising and donor-relations tools. The foundation web site, for example, has achieved impressive results. After just five months in 2002, total dollars raised from online gifts have increased 54 percent over all of 2001."

The following individuals helped produce the six CASE winners: Danette Angerer, Nic Arp, Theresa Black, Dick Blazek, Connie Driscoll-Wicke, Debbie Durham, Jean Florman, Anne Heilemann, Hilery Livengood, Albert Jagnow, Jane Martin, Diane Hill Merchant, Jill Michka, Beth Nobles, Julie Johnson Olson, Maria Stadtmueller and Heather Woodin.

The CASE recognition program honors outstanding work of the colleges, universities and independent schools that are CASE members. CASE receives more than 3,800 entries for its nationwide annual publications awards program.

The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university. Foundation staff work with alumni and friends to generate funds for scholarships, professorships, facilities improvements, equipment purchases, research and other UI initiatives.
