Two UI students win Gunderson scholarships for study abroad

IOWA CITY -- Two University of Iowa students have been awarded the Naomi Gunderson Scholarship for Foreign Language Study Abroad. Troy Morgan, a UI senior from Ottumwa, was awarded $2,000, and Nana Diederichs, a UI junior from Cresco, was awarded $1,000 for study abroad during the 2002-2003 academic year. Morgan, a Russian major and history minor, will study in Russia through the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) during the 2002-2003 academic year. Diederichs, a comparative literature major and French minor, will study in Paris, France, at the CIEE Critical Studies Program during the fall of 2002. These highly competitive scholarships are awarded annually to UI undergraduate students to develop advanced proficiency in a foreign language while studying abroad. Preference for the award is given to students who speak a language taught at the UI and who plan to study for a full academic year at a foreign university. The scholarship was created in memory of Naomi Gunderson, a UI alumna who earned a bachelor's degree in 1916 and a master's degree in 1919. Gunderson taught English, Spanish and Latin at high schools in Iowa and California. Having studied abroad several times during her college career, Gunderson created the scholarship to enable UI students to experience foreign cultures. Gunderson's gift was made to the UI Foundation, the UI's preferred channel for private support. The Office for Study Abroad is part of International Programs, which consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost and dean for International Programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and promote global scholarship, research and training. The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university.
