| Reading Recovery gets $50,000 grant, promise of more funds

IOWA CITY -- The Reading Recovery Center of Iowa has received a $50,000 gift from the William Lynch Foundation of San Diego, Calif. William Lynch is an alumnus of the University of Iowa's Henry B. Tippie College of Business. The Lynch Foundation has promised an additional $50,000 each year to the reading center for the next three years. The money will be used to fund the program assistant position and to purchase professional materials for the center, which serves 14 Reading Recovery sites throughout Iowa. "I am very grateful to Mr. Lynch for his vision and commitment to the children who have the greatest challenges with reading," said Salli Forbes, director of the program. Reading Recovery's goal is to reach all first-grade students who have difficulty learning to read and write, a group that in Iowa includes an estimated 20 percent of the first-grade population. The Reading Recovery Center of Iowa currently serves 16 percent of Iowa's first-grade students, making it the most successful program in the country. This gift was made through The University of Iowa Foundation, which is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university.
